The Five Ten Rogue VCS (MSRP $99) is a budget-priced super-soft Velcro slipper for all-around comfort. What I like about this slipper is that it’s extremely comfortable, fits well and the Velcro does a good job of cinching the shoe around my foot. However, its split-grain leather upper is not durable, and the shoe’s tongue slides around and bunches up.

Climbing Gear Reviews UK Performance 3/5, Style 4/5, Value 4/5

5.10 Rogue VCS is a great improvement on the 2010 model. They are supremely comfortable and will be a great beginner shoe for people just starting out and making that all important transition from climbing wall/gym to outdoor climbing. I have worn them for instructing, muliti pitch climbing to VS, single pitch climbing and sport climbing as well as bouldering and they have performed well. Do remember to size them appropriately as they will stretch over time and that they are definitely not a hard, performance shoe. The range comes in a lace up version for extra precision and a women’s specific version. Sizes UK 1-13 in half sizes and UK 14.

Marketed to take climbers “from the gym to the rocks,” Five Ten has produced an affordable, all-around Velcro shoe. A flat, slightly asymmetric last, medium-stiff midsole, and perforated synthetic uppers with a padded tongue are a recipe for comfort and all-around use. More than one tester commented that the Rogue didn’t tighten evenly. The upper strap is bulky and not as effective as the lower, thinner strap. The Rogue is not as stiff or sensitive as Five Ten’s Anasazi Velcro, but the 3.5mm Stealth C4 rubber sticks just as well to the tiniest nubs.

Every climber needs a go-to gym shoe that doubles as an outside pair when hopping on every pitch in sight; the Rogue VCS fills that void and then some. “I wore this shoe for a few pitches in Boulder Canyon that turned into a late-night gym session after we got rained out,” one tester said. “I never thought twice about needing another shoe.” With a redesigned slingshot heel, the Rogue now fits most foot types. Before, medium- and low-volume feet swam and twisted in heel-hooks; now, testers could sink and stick with no problems. This mid-performance shoe has a flat last for comfort but an asymmetric toe for piercing pockets and finding small edges. The Stealth C4 rubber stuck to mucked-up gym holds, and it took a beating day in and day out, climbing up to 10 pitches a few times a week. Instead of metal loops for the Velcro that are attached to the outside of the upper, there are eyelets built into the upper. Not only does this create a more snug fit, but it’s also much more durable, especially when you’re constantly donning and doffing in the gym.
