With a reasonable price tag, an aggressive shape, and a soft midsole, the Hiangles are a great high-performance shoe for gym climbing, sport climbing, and bouldering. Though they did not necessarily excel in any of our metric comparisons, they performed decently overall, making them a fairly good all-around shoe for sport climbing.

The Five Ten Hiangle is a fantastic, high-performance sport and bouldering shoe, providing an unusual combination of edging power, sensitivity, and comfort. If you‘re looking for powerful edging with little regard for sensitivity, you’ll probably be better off with something like the Scarpa Instinct VS, Evolv Agro, or Sportiva Miura VS. Additionally, sport climbers whose projects mostly consist of pocketed limestone may find themselves a little underwhelmed by the rounded toe shape of the Hiangle. However, for the majority of boulderers and sport climbers, the Hiangle blends those factors together artfully, rather than going all-in on one of them.

The Hiangle is a great addition to the Five Ten range, and I can see why so many Five Ten devotees have switched to it from the Dragon. It gives a great ratio of comfort to performance and as such it has fitted nicely into my shoe armoury (!) as a do-nearly-everything-shoe. The Hiangle combines a soft, comfortable upper with a supportive midsole that deals well with those footholds that you really need to stand tall on. The shoe is less good in pockets due to the more rounded toe box, but for general bouldering the Hiangle compares well with much more expensive models. All things considered, the Hiangle it a very attractive choice for anyone wanting to push their climbing to the next level.

With a comfortable fit and medium-high level of performance, the Hiangle is excellent for climbers looking for their first pair of aggressive shoes or those who want a higher level of performance in the gym.

Reliable partner. This shoe has officially joined my repertoire of climbing shoes as a steady go-to. I know I can trust it to stay put and be there for me when things get burly or when I need a great edger.

I’d give these shoes three out of five stars. I like them for warming up and climbing on stuff that’s not very steep with smaller footholds. Generally I want something softer and more aggressive when the going gets intense. That being said, for its stated purpose of helping people transition from more supportive shoes into a downturned slipper for steeper climbing, I think it delivers.

Overall, the Hiangle is a great shoe design. The slipper style (with velcro tightening strap) is a little difficult to get your foot into but makes for a great fit once on. I really like the design and extra rubber on the toe box is a nice benefit. The Hiangle isn’t perfect for all styles of climbing but it will make a nice tool in a rock climber’s shoe quiver.
